Old and New San Juan, as a Planning Idea

What is worth keeping from the old idea

The useful part of an “old and new” day is the contrast, explained on Old San Juan vs New San Juan. Colonial streets and forts on one side. Condado, Santurce or the modern waterfront as a change of atmosphere on the other. The useless part is any sentence that implies a coach, a pier pickup, or a price you can split. None of that is offered here.

A smaller group changes pace. It does not create a car. If you travel with children, with someone who needs more sitting, or with a camera and no interest in a schedule, the question to ask any host — elsewhere — is which stop gets dropped. Ask it before you assume both districts happen.

A honest mixed day

• Start from the pier. A walkable Old San Juan arrival can begin in the historic core. A Pan American arrival spends its first energy on a transfer. See the walkable page.
• Give the old city the longer share. That is the part you cannot repeat in the next port in the same way.
• Treat the modern city as one neighbourhood, not a tour of “new San Juan”. One beachfront or one food stop is a sample.
• Keep a city-only backup if the transfer between districts is slow. This page does not publish a drive time.
