Castillo San Felipe del Morro sits on the headland above the harbour entrance. Castillo San Cristóbal guards the landward side of the old city. Between and around them is the colonial street grid cruise passengers actually wander: plazas, churches, residences, and the walls themselves. La Fortaleza, the governor’s residence, is part of the same historic ensemble, closer to the waterfront than the seaward ramparts. You do not need a second website to hold the forts. They belong in this cluster, beside the walking guide.

The UNESCO World Heritage listing that covers this ensemble is “La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site”. That is context, not an inclusion on a tour, and not a statement that every gate is open when your ship is in.

How to use a historic day

Pick one fort to understand, not two to tick. El Morro rewards time on the ramparts and punishes anyone who arrives already overheated from a long street loop. San Cristóbal is the landward fort, closer to the east side of the old city, and a different walk from the headland. Opening hours, tickets and bag rules change. Check them that morning. This page will not quote a fee or a last-entry time.

A historical day is still a walking day. Footwear, slopes and heat are on the walking guide. The pier question is on whether you can walk from the ship. If Jewish heritage is the historical interest, it has its own careful page at Jewish heritage in San Juan. Do not fold that into a fort loop as if it were a labelled stop.
